Success Story
A Success Story!
A majority of West Virginians are overweight. In fact, almost eighty percent do
not eat five fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Unfortunately, there is
nothing new about these statistics. However, a group of employees who routinely
help others are now helping themselves.
The employees of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources in
Mingo County have decided to take a stand and become healthier individuals.
Since joining the PEIA Pathways to Wellness Program last year, they have made a
conscious effort to eat healthier and make better lifestyle choices. Worksite
Coordinator Chris Dotson is extremely pleased with the progress her fellow
employees have made. “Since the beginning of the program many of my co-workers
tell me they have begun to cook healthier, read food labels, exercise and
really think about what they are eating.”
While many wellness worksites only participate in one or two behavior change
programs a year, these state employees have not only completed four programs,
but they have also participated in National Women’s Heart Health Week, Random
Acts of Kindness Week and observed National Eating Disorders Week. “The great
thing is my co-workers are gaining knowledge and passing it on to their
families as well. One lady has her entire family eating better and one grandson
has actually lost twenty pounds under her influence of healthy eating,” Dotson
added.
Trying to become healthier has many benefits. In the midst of employees
encouraging each other, many Mingo County DHHR employees have developed a sense
of team unity. According to Dotson, “The program helps promote teamwork.
Nothing helps a person trying to lose weight or change eating habits like a
compliment. Offer encouragement to everyone.”
Overall, Dotson says that her co-workers enjoy participating in the Pathways to
Wellness program. Fruit smoothies have been made, exercise and fitness handouts
have been distributed and recipes have been compiled all in an attempt to keep
the program fresh and exciting. “I would definitely recommend the wellness
program to other sites! The pros of this program far outweigh the cons. The
rewards are wonderful.”
