Stepping Stones Pedometer Walking Program at William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital

The 6-week walking program has been completed by 86 out of the 143 Sharpe Hospital staff who started the program. The group had a 60% completion rate as a whole.

Here are some comments by staff who completed the program:

Pam Lewis: “The pedometer helped my motivation; I'm still wearing it sometimes. I watched my carbohydrates a little more too and lost a little weight. The most interesting thing for me was I realized I hadn’t walked as much as I thought. It helped me scheduled my time.”

Janet Canterbury: “Seeing the larger number of steps taken on the days I do walk has been encouraging.”

Richard Jackson: “The pedometer worked well. Keeping track of my steps pushed me to get in more steps. I got more stamina, and it helped me build up. I got into some conversations about it.”

Elaina Lester: “The pedometer worked well, and it was motivating.”

Kathy Claypool: “It was an excellent program...it encourages people to see what they are doing. This program had a lot of mental benefits since my husband and I had a competition (I beat him!).”

This comes from University High School. It was sent by Susan Pinto.

First of all, I was really surprised at how many steps I walked per day. I even went walking and counted 500, then 600 steps to see if the pedometer was accurate. First the pedometer seemed to have counted too many steps but the second time it seemed to count too little, so I figured it all averaged out.

Using the pedometer daily showed me that I really move around my classroom during the day and that I move a lot less on the weekends. I have enjoyed using the pedometer and check it often throughout the day. It reinforced my feeling that I'm doing something good for my body when I park my car a little farther away or take the steps.

Thank you for allowing me to take part in the "Stepping Stones" pedometer program.

Sincerely,
Mary Kay McQuain
